[NSFW] Fetish Insight: Bondage

bj0rN | September 28, 2008

Well, this is our first segment of Fetish Insight, where we get down to discuss on the various types of fetish that people like and what is it all about. Just to be warn that this article will be NSFW and that any other articles from Fetish Insights are most likely going to be that way so just keep that in mind.

And so onto the topic that we’re going to cover for this first one is, “Bondage”. As we all would have noticed that bondage in eroge can be found within a erotic or sexual content. However it is something that is different from how people would indulge in BDSM in real life.

In the context of BDSM, bondage involves people being tied up or otherwise restrained for pleasure. Though bondage is kind of part of BDSM where people tend to do it to seek pleasure for themselves, for eroges, its commonly related to sexual activity in which the act of restraining one’s partner acts as something similar to foreplay or as a means of building up or increasing the sexual excitement of both male and female involved or vice-versa and in even some cases, to have two of the same genders taking part in it.

If you’re interested, do continue on and just don’t get tied down later on as I show you the ropes.

Bondage can be sorted into six different categories:

  • Bondage that pulls parts of the body together (rope, chains, straps, harnesses)
  • Bondage that spreads parts of the body apart (spreader bars, St Andrews cross)
  • Bondage that ties the body down to another object (such as chairs or stocks)
  • Bondage that suspends the body from another object (suspension bondage)
  • Bondage that restricts normal movement (hobble skirts, handcuffs, harness)
  • Bondage that wraps the whole body or a part of it in plastic (saran) wrap (clingfilm, mummification, gaffer tape)
  • Bondage that provides a confined, inescapable space (cages, cells)

I’m sure we’ve seen a fair share of the above though I’m think some of them are rare cases like having the wrap the whole body like some cocoon. Of course there’s a variety of techniques that also comes into play, be it simple or complex.

Technique varies but I shall touch on the basis of the Japanese style, also known as Shibari (縛り), which means literally, “to bind” or “to tie” and it is seen to be more artistic. It is used to describe the artful use of twine to tie objects or packages. Kinbaku (緊縛, Kinbaku) is the word for “bondage”. The Japanese style of bondage is rather unique such as in a way, instead of just immobilizing or restraining the bottom (or also known as the submissive). The bottom gains pleasure from being under the pressure and strain of the ropes, squeezing the breasts or genitals. The aesthetics of the bound person’s position are also important: In particular, Japanese bondage is notorious for its use of asymmetric positions to heighten the psychological impact of the bondage.

Some of the techniques of Japanese sexual bondage originated with 捕縄術 (Hojojutsu), traditional Japanese martial art of restraining a person using cord or rope but of course sexual bondage techniques are far gentler.

Some interesting thing I found out was the following:

Bondage within couples usually involves one partner being voluntarily tied-up or put into restraints (i.e. bound / cuffed / spread-eagled etc) by the other, who then either sexually pleasures the tied partner (using manual masturbation, oral sex, vibrating sex toys etc.); or has sex with them while they are restrained, or of course both. The erotic appeal is often in the form of feedback from the writhing / struggles / vocalizations etc of the tied partner. The tied partner may derive pleasure from being in a largely ‘helpless’ predicament in the hands of a trusted partner, and the other may enjoy the mild domination involved in having their partner in that predicament. Either way, many established couples find playing bondage games relationship-affirming, as they both require and imply a level of trust between the partners that is not normally found within more casual relationships, as well as being a shared ‘private’ facet of their sex life that most couples prefer to keep just between the two of them.

Which I guess kind of make sense to a certain extend but then again, if it was for the case of non-couples doing it, might have been another different thing all together, perhaps depending on the kind of setting.

There are also some common fantasy settings in which bondage is often played:

  • Rape, ravishment and/or abduction: The top fictitiously seizes or abducts the consenting bottom and has complete control to do what he/she pleases.
  • Dominance/slavery: A training session occurs in which rewards for obedience and punishment for defiance are given. Humiliation is usually involved.
  • Predicament bondage: The bottom is given a choice between two tortures. For example, caning on the rear or flogging on the chest. If the bottom cannot stand one any longer, the top will start the other. This can also be done mechanically, like having a bottom squat and rigging a crotch rope to tighten if they attempt to stand.

As far as my point of view on bondage, it’s more of a trust between couples and is definitely something that signifies that a relationship has progressed at least that far that either side could do it and trust that the other won’t screw things up. Then again, it can be seen as an act of art, pleasure and trust,  submission and humiliation, or that someone who just loves to be thrilled by the excitment of it.

I tried to read this post, but the images were so distracting I couldn’t make much sense of it. But I should note that some people (strangely) like it when its with a stranger too. Many types of humans indeed.

This reminds me of an article on BBC where people discuss about S&M stuff…

Personally I don’t like ropes on girls ‘cept if it’s on their hands hoisted above the head… I guess that’s a different fetish.
