The picks of the 2009 spring season.Julius_Firefocht | April 16, 2009
The spring season is into the 3rd week now, and we had ample time to sample and decide which anime we wanted to watch. So we are going to write up a list of the titles we are picking, and perhaps provide some reasons for our choices.
I shall start the ball rolling first. Other NK-DS writers might contribute their own lists later, so stay tuned.
1) Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen
This is the best show of the season. I know I sound like a broken record, but damn. Nothing comes close to the feeling and kick I get out of seeing Mazinger Z in action, animated in glorious modern animation. Shin Mazinger turns grown men into whimpering little kids, and looks good while doing it.
KyoAni’s offering this season, and they have done well if the 1st two episodes are anything to go by. Mio may be the sexiest and the most popular character in K-On, but I prefer Yui, especially when she is eating the snacks given to her by Tsumugi. So moe.
3) Hayate no Gotoku S2
HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA HINA.
And Sister Fortesia.
This is Mahou Shoujo Yuri Moe Mahjong, with an extremely strong seiyuu cast. Seriously, Gonzo would have to be idiots if they can go wrong with such a formula. I am watching this for Nodoka, and I am liking how Gonzo animated her wet uniform in episode 1. I must admit the Mahjong terms go right pass me though.
5) Tayutama ~Kiss on my diety~
Every season needs a harem fanservice show that does its best to offer a presentable plot, yet often fails miserably. Tayutama has not failed yet, and I hope it will not since I liked what I saw in the 1st episode. Mashiro is very moe, probably right behind K-On’s Yui when measured with this season’s Moemeter.
Come to think of it, Kanokon was the last time I watched something with a fox as the main female lead, and I rather not talk about that.
6) Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
I watched the 1st season and liked it, just as the majority of the anime community did. Now FMA is back for a 2nd round, and I feel obliged to watch it if only for the excellence of the series as a whole. Besides, Wrath might be one of Nana’s few roles this season, and that is more than enough justification for me to stick with FMA Brotherhood.
7) Asura Crying
Now, I really have no idea why I included this in my list. It might be due to the fact that Seven Arcs is animating it. Anyway, the 1st episode was too fast for me to catch the story, but the 2nd episode felt much better. A strong seiyuu cast that includes Haruka Tomatsu, Ai Nonaka and Tanaka Rie also contributed to my unexplained enthusiasm for this show.
The mecha in Asura Crying felt unneccessary though, like the mecha in Kannazuki no Miko. Wait, there was no mecha in Kannazuki no Miko, was there? Yeah, my memory failed me for a moment.
This is Julius Firefocht, signing off.
