Blood: The Last Vampire (2009) Movie Review
Mycstea | June 6, 2009Just stepping out of the cinemas at Cathay AMK Hub, there was only one word in my mind. EPIC.

Yes the poster does look cool, plus she’s hot.
Spoilers ahead so thread carefully if you wanna avoid being erm, spoiled.
Admittingly, I did not watched the original Blood: The Last Vampire animated movie by Production IG in the year 2000. However, i did watch and finish Blood+ and had a rather good impression of the monster-slaying, high flying vampiric action Anime.
What I’ve seen today is really really epic. Epic lols. Below are just some of the more obvious discontinuities and questions unanswered for in the story.
Alice is all knowing
In the story, Alice plays the helpless victim of all these horrible events. However, in the wake of these series of events, Alice seems to possess a rather powerful ability, otherwise known as Perfect Knowledge. This can be seen in a variety of scenes as stated below.
It all begins with the massacre scene in the front half of the movie. After her teacher Mr Powell turns into that ugly mess of muscle and gets injured, it flies off in an unknown direction. With a quick scene change, Saya and Alice ends up being in her jeep and ends up going full speed to the military base. Wow how did she know that the Demon is flying towards the airbase?
In another scene, after learning of her father’s untimely departure, Alice actually has the composure to pick up the notepad the sergeant was writing on. But wait, how did she know that the address is Saya’s? Didn’t she only arrive there right after the shooting?
Many scenes later, Saya collapsed because of her injury. Alice, being a logical girl with decent band-aid knowledge knows she needs to clean the wound or change it or at least, extract the bullet yes? Nope. All Saya needs is human blood. Wait, how did Alice know that too? Saya never told Alice she drinks blood. In fact she only said that the “Council provides her with what she needs to live”.
In the “World beyond the looking glass”, the first thing Alice said was, “This isn’t real!” Wow, someone who just woke up from a nasty fall realises that while Saya who has been up and about for a while, is blinded by her own desires. I would go “Where the hell is this place” if i were her.
Alice is invincible to damage
In this movie, Alice is invincible. After attacks from numerous mobs of Demons and loads of pushing and falling, there she suffers 0 scratches, 0 bruises, not even any thorn clothes!
As Onigen picks Alice up in rage, Onigen summons a great ball of fire, which eventually leads to a giant explosion which threw Saya out of the entire blast radius. But i guess God Mode protected Alice from being totally degenerated. Onigens then proceeds to throw Alice like a ragdoll into the water.
After a failed (Fail) rescuscitation by Saya, Alice wakes up from her “coma” in relatively perfect state. Impressive regeneration skills eh.
Japanese form switches on the go
From my brief understanding of Japanese, i understood everything Saya and Katou talked about but i can’t help but notice the extreme differences in tones by the actors…
An example by Katou will be his honorifics for Saya:
- Saya dono
- Saya sama
- Saya san
- Saya
- Omae!!!
Other random discontinuities
First of all, why does a Demon with wings, want to cling on to an American flying transport to escape Saya? It doesn’t really make sense, since his flying abilites weren’t really damaged.
Also, nothing was really explained about Saya’s “deadly blood” as well as her eye colour changes. It all seems to look like over-dramatised special effects if you asked someone who has no concept of the show.
Saya and Alice travels with no destination. With only the clue that Onigen is in an “onsen” somewhere, they set off with no location address, no hotel name, no nothing to track down Onigen in actual fact. The only clue possible was a photograph of a hotel staff without his head. But hey, if their camera crew could have taken that photo, they would have encountered her by then already.
The wooden hut that Alice and Saya took refuge in is also a wtf moment as it looks as though it popped out from the ground.
Onigen’s umbrella magically evolves into a Katana. Wait, that is physically impossible. Why? Because the umbrella’s stick is a long round stick and the Katana is a curved… flat edge.
Final boss Onigen… sucks?
She just… dies? Wait, i didn’t even see any action there. In fact, her screen time is the shortest of all supposed “main” Characters in the show. Even the extras survived longer.
To conclude, this show is enjoyable as a whole because it not only provides a hot chick as a main lead (Twin braids with a relatively flat chest and some upskirts!), a freaking cool old dude and decent fight scenes, it also provided observant viewers with stuff to laugh about after the movie ends. In the meantime, I’ll hold on to my popcorn and wait for Transformers 2 to arrive in Singapore so till then,
wa si lin lau bu! (i kid)

this is undoubtably the biggest dissepointment of any amine/ film
alisa | June 26, 2009this is undoubtably the biggest dissepointment of any amine/ film lover.
being a fan of both the 2000 animation movie as well as the blood plus series, i have to say that is was a load of bull.
completely unrelated to the original themes, the only thing it stuck to was the idea of blood sucking and sayas character, although saya was still the protagonist, many unknown characters were added in, without any relevance. the theme of love was almost completely lost. when i saw the trailors I assumed that the japanese girl in white would be Diva, sayas blood SISTER in the blood plus reies, therefor combinning the anime film with the series, but no , it was her MOTHER wtf, the surreality of the last sequence was completely irrelevant to the story line, im not sure if there were no sub titles in the version i watched when there should have been because i watched it on the internet and i understand that i could have lost a lot of understanding through the lack of subs but I somehow get the feeling that the dissepointment would have been just as great.
there was also no mention of the word CHIROPTERA in the film, which should have been constant throughout as it was in both the 2000 film AND the series, in my opinion the director was simply too lazy to transform every BLOODSUCKER in the film into a fully blown monster. And when the transformation did occure there was the effect of sparkly dust and a bit of wind, which in turn revealed a distinctly S*** plastic looking monster, completely lacking the distinkt charactaristics of the original chriroptera. the whole film seemed quite lazy, even though this perticular director is well known for his brilliant use of colour in films such as HERO this was nowhere to be found in this film (blood, the last vampire).
Overall i think it was hugely dissepointing, although i cannot judge it with the eye of someone who has not seen the previouse animated film or the series I can only assume that the general response will not be a positive one….well, if theyve got any sence that is.
I've tried to take a more comical view at this
Mycstea | June 30, 2009I’ve tried to take a more comical view at this movie, thus the semi-optimistic view of the show. I was dissappointed at the show as well, but i looked over it and felt it was just “lol” more then “huh”.
this was way better than blood + (which contained absolutely
tranformers2sucks | August 8, 2009this was way better than blood + (which contained absolutely 0 vampires for a show based on something called the last vampire wtf?) in sticking closer to the original yet VERY brief storyline. It had a lot of silly movie moments like the white girl being all knowing(its cause she is white you orientals LOL) but made up for it with good old style sword fighting action and ass whippings. Too bad the Legend of Chun li wasnt made after this, they could have taken lessons on how to make a action movie with real action in it even at the risk of being a tad bit campy.
I just finished watching BLOOD The Last Vampire (2009) and
TK-Chan | November 11, 2009I just finished watching BLOOD The Last Vampire (2009) and wow….I have to admit overlooking the terrible scenes of CGed monsters and that one fighitng scene between the caverns on the truck it was quite good.
The action was most definately thee main highlight of this movie
did anyone notice the soundeffects of the blood and slicing being over used and abused???<.<
Anyway, I agree there are wtf moments and very odd things come to my mind after reading everyone's posts here
I really want to watch the anime series and (2000) movie now, I'm sure they will be so much better than the movie considering they came first and are the origin of the true story! I look forward to watching the series and movie I'm sure I'll have much more commentary about the (2009) movie once I've gotten a look at the original series and (2000) animated movie!
