Kimi ni Todoke Ep 3: Sweet Sawako is sweet.

 Million dollar smile

So, as I mentioned in an earlier post, people are starting to realize just how sweet Sawako actually is. I demand a kimono scene, dammit.

The past few episodes had Sawako building her social life from the ground up, and to this day I am quite surprised at the high amount of emotional energy that I am investing into her. It has been a while since I cheered so hard for a character in any anime. And Kimi ni Todoke is supposed to be one of the “sleepers” of this season. So much for the high profile projects like Railgun and Nogizaka Haruka S2…

The enemy appears.

A new character is introduced, voiced by Aya Hirano. It is the enshrined right of every Nana fan to bare their fangs and growl menacingly whenever a character voiced by Deko appears, thanks to Aya’s transparent attempt to ride on Nana’s popularity using White Album. This is doubly so in this case, since I automatically classify as an enemy anything that threatens the growth of Sawako’s budding social life and her relationship to Kazehaya. Being voiced by Aya Hirano only gives me more excuses to pour the irrational hate on her, which is a good thing. :D

Soldier on, Sawako. We are all rooting for you.

Kimi ni Todoke: Those guys got it wrong, Sawako is gorgeous.

Julius_Firefocht | October 18, 2009

Something has been bugging me ever since I first laid eyes upon Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke. Then it finally hit me. Everyone in the class says Sawako looks like a ghost and how it freaks them out etc etc, but they never had the benefit of considering this…

Sawako.

Mamiko Noto, Sawako’s seiyuu

That’s right… Sawako pretty much is the animated version of Noto, which makes Noto the real life version of Sawako. Show me a person who says he freaks out at seeing Mamiko Noto and I will show you a liar. Those guys who freaked out at Sawako are going to regret it when Sawako wears a kimono and unleashes the Yamato Nadeshiko side of her. I can just see that coming.

On a sidenote, Sawako’s endless optimism never ceases to amaze me. If I had to choose between Nogizaka Haruka or Sawako as the better Noto-voiced female lead, I would choose Sawako without batting an eyelid. Haruka is too “perfect” so to speak, while Sawako is a normal girl that is sweet and endearing. I felt more for Sawako in 2 episodes than I did for Haruka in 15 episodes, which is saying something.

So yeah, Kazehaya is no fool and knows a good girl when he sees one, unlike all the other idiots in the school. More power to him, he is one of the rare few none-hotblooded male lead that earned my respect. Everyone else that I classify as a true man have this tendency to scream out their intentions before beating the crap out of their opponents, so this guy is a special case, I guess.

To wrap things up, putting aside the convenient and uncanny resemblance of Sawako and Noto, go watch Kimi ni Todoke if you like shoujo anime or manga. You will not be disappointed.
